I always wondered why in pretty much every story it is considered "balance" or "harmony" if one side (mostly the big bad) is defeated. Isn't it exactly the opposite of balance and harmony if there's only one side left?

Yeah that always confused me as well. Unlike Star wars where a great bad/evil was created to balance the almost overwhelming peace, most stories consider "balance" as the good side obliterating the evil side and I find that odd.

One could argue that good represents peace, harmony or balance. While evil represents war, chaos or imbalance. As long as this counter-balance for balance exists, there can't be balance.

I believe that's how it works in George's Star Wars lore as well. When ultimate evil was eradicated there was balance in the Force as there was nothing disrupting this balance.

However as far as Friendship is Betrayal goes, harmony is the state where day and night are equally powerful. A curious thing I noted is that twilight means the time between night and day. Whether the legend Nightmare Moon speaks of here is just an old mare's tale is of course up for debate :)

If the Prequel Trilogy is to be believed, Balance was occurring when Anakin joined and strengthened the Dark Side.

my personal take on Anakin being destined to "bring balance to the force" is that he in fact did, before his rise to power there were hundreds or even thousands of Jedi and two Sith afterwards (between episodes 3 and 4) there were 2 Jedi (Yoda and Obi-wan) and two sith (Anakin and Palpatine)
